Stranded Review

by Gary Kroeger

Jeremy Milks' Stranded is difficult to categorize. It is a short film to be sure but in the relatively few minutes that it runs it plays with multiple strands of genres as a film noir
parody. Although comedic, it is a docu-serious horror film. Not To be taken too seriously, of course, is the film's antagonist, the "Huggy Monster", who apparently in his (it's) lustful enthusiasm hugs people to death.

Never leaving the single set of a car, Milks uses his limited resources to the max. Black and
white, high contrast, and a moving camera creates the realistic impression of In Cold Blood or
more accurately, the original Night of the Living Dead. Good performances keep the surreal, and frankly, quite silly, narrative, honest. Just when it seems that the situation is about to become indulgent, Milks' camera and script remind us not to take anything too seriously.

Even the credits provide a tongue in cheek salute to that premise.
